Master Instructor Certification

Master Instructor Certification or “MIC” is the process through which JATC and/or AJATC Instructors can gain recognition and certification for acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to teach the IBEW/NECA/NJATC Curriculum. MIC tracks are specific paths to certification which emphasize the training necessary for a selected group of courses used in a specific year of apprenticeship, or which emphasize a specific technology. Tracks may be defined by year of apprenticeship training or by specialty when related to Journeyman training.

Each MIC Track has multiple requirements. In order to complete any track individual Instructors must meet all of the requirements for that track. To complete Tracks, Instructors must graduate from the NJATC’s National Training Institute (NTI); and must complete specific “core” training courses and a specified number of Instructor selected “elective” courses shown in this guide.

All courses required for the MIC process are “How-To-Teach” courses which emphasize the use of the Instructor Resources which have been developed through the NJATC. These resources have been developed for local Instructors and enable those Instructors to deliver training to apprentices and Journeyman in a professional and informed manner. Instructors, who register for MIC courses, should already be knowledgeable in the subject which they wish to teach.

Courses specified for MIC Tracks are by topic area. Some courses may cover material not covered in a specific year or area. One example would be the Blueprints Course, which will cover all blueprint lessons and resources; not just those for a given year of apprenticeship. All MIC courses will cover all lessons for both apprenticeship and Journeyman training for each topic when there are both apprenticeship level and Journeyman level classes available. One example would be Programmable Logic Controllers which has nine apprenticeship level lessons and nine lessons which are available for extended or Journeyman lessons.

Instructors may enroll in the MIC program at any time, and are not required to have graduated from the NTI or taken any particular courses prior to registering in the MIC program. Graduation from the NTI either before MIC registration or during the time while registered in the MIC program is required, as are specified courses taken prior to or during registration in the program.
